The main interest in the village of Emporio is the castle of Emporio, perhaps one of the most enchanting places in Santorini. This well preserved citadel and a tower standing next to it will throw the visitors firsthand back into the rich history of Santorini.

Historical significance

The castle of Emporio, which used to bear the name of the castle of Nimborio- so was the settlement previously called- built in the middle of the 15th century, is located in the biggest village on the southern part of Santorini. During the Frankokratia, or the period when the Cyclades belonged to the Venetians, pirate invasions presented a constant danger.

The Venetians protected several settlements across Santorini, one of which was Emporio, acting as an important strategic point. Therefore, the general aim of this castle was the defense of the island's trade center and citizens from these repetitive raids.

Architectural marvel

It is impossible to fathom the layout of the castle since there are houses clumped closely together, connected with bridges and narrow streets. The building was mainly designed to be defensive, and the protection of the residents was ensured by the tiny passageways and a single entrance.

Visitors today can walk through these narrow lanes and come across doors, tiny windows, archways, and secret steps wherever they look. Certainly charming, this castle typifies Venetian architecture that walks you through quiet pathways full of peace and history. It is still one of the best-preserved castles on the island and an important architectural monument of Santorini.

The churches within the castle

Adding to the historic and cultural appeal of the area are the various exquisite churches existing within the fortified settlement, such as the 16th-century Church of Panagia Mesiani. Such hallowed spots offer a gentle counterpoint to the castle's defensive edifices, providing guests with the opportunity for quiet contemplation of the spiritual legacy of the island.

The Goulas tower

Right next to the castle stands Goulas Tower which was a defence structure built relatively near to the fortress. This was essentially built to stock harvests in it, along with finding shelter at the time of disasters. This further has an underground connecting path to the castle with a tiny chapel within it. With various signs of apparent deterioration, the square still stands proudly standing in the north side of the village.
