Situated in the picturesque town of Imerovigli, it still amazes tourists with its historical significance and breathtaking setting, even though today there are only traces of its previous splendor.
The castle of Skaros had the privileged position on a ledge of rock in the late Middle Ages, to defend the island from pirate raids. Its position could enable its inhabitants to spot any potential threat since it commanded impressive views over the coasts. A wooden bridge was a mobile link between the fortress and the remainder of the hamlet that could be built in defense of the town.
By name and function, the castle was a fortress that was constructed totally out of stone. More than 200 houses, churches, monasteries, and narrow, maze-like streets once existed within its tiny area. The castle was never conquered despite its solid fortifications; it simply disintegrated over the centuries due to a series of volcanic eruptions and the earthquakes they caused.
Even today, when it is little more than a ruin, Skaros still carries with it the weight of its history. Only fragments remain of the powerful walls that once surrounded the fortress, as do the faint remnants of the old bridge that originally connected it to the mainland. Two significant chapels may also be present in the place: the Chapel of Panagia Theoskepasti, which is a magnificently whitewashed church that may be found hanging on the cliff edge in front of the promontory, and Chapel of Agios Ioannis Apokefalistheis lying across Skaros.
Boasting impressive views across the volcano and the caldera and extending down to neighboring islands, Skaros also is home to Santorini's most remarkable visual attractions. Quite high and nice to hike with numerous rock plateaus for thrilling maneuvers, making adventurous walking throughout historical remains, bringing you closer to the nature of this fascinating island. The views from Imerovigli over with the stronghold in the front are worth it in themselves even if you do not feel like making on to Skaros itself.
• To make the most of your visit to Skaros Castle in Santorini, wear comfortable shoes for the rocky, uneven terrain and be prepared for a hike to the site, which takes around 20-30 minutes.
• Visit early or late in the day to avoid crowds and capture the best light for photos.
• Bring water, snacks, and sun protection as there’s limited shade, and take your time exploring the castle's ruins while respecting the site’s integrity. The castle offers stunning panoramic views of the caldera, so be sure to bring your camera.
• Afterwards, explore the nearby town of Imerovigli for more beautiful views and a taste of local life.
