The village dates back to the 17th century, while in the 19th century, it was the industrial center of the island, boasting cave houses and elegant mansions. Today it has a different sense of beauty as it exudes a classy atmosphere, while from some parts of it, visitors can see beautiful views of the shimmering waters of the Aegean Sea in the distance, as well as the stunning landscapes that surround the village. More than its picturesque look and beautiful views, Messaria offers a tranquil and very genuine atmosphere, away from the more crowded touristy areas, yet close enough to all the main attractions on the island.
Messaria offers the perfect blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty, ideal for visitors who want to experience Santorini in reality. Some of the best things to do during your visit are as follows:
The mansion was built in 1888 by local craftsmen, and it was once the residence of George Argyros and his family, who played the main role in producing and exporting the famous Vinsanto wine of the island. However, the earthquake in 1956 resulted in its 35 years of abandonment until 1985, the year when it was declared a cultural landmark. In 1994 it was fully restored for the first time ever, and it opened to the public, boasting 19th-century Santorini at its best. Today it functions as a museum with old furniture, old photographs, and various documents that show the impact of the Argyros family on the economic and social life of Santorini, offering a window to the rich past of the island.
Get familiar with the local architecture by taking a stroll around Messaria and viewing the huge mansion houses dotting the area, including, apart from the mansion of Argyros, Markezinis, and Saliveros mansions. These 19th-century structures show the former prosperity of this island and bring out the period when Santorini was a powerful commercial and industrial hub, while their design combines the island's traditional Cycladic style, with whitewashed walls and rounded arches, with elements influenced by neoclassical trends. These big residencies show the great history that Santorini had and stand in contrast against the modern development surrounding them today.
Wandering through the narrow alleys of the village will offer you the chance to experience the rhythms of local life. Whitewashed houses featuring blue shutters add beauty to the village, while their vibrant courtyards bring oases with bougainvillea flowers. Quaint shops line the small streets full of handmade jewelry, pottery, and local products, while bakeries fill the air with aromas from various pastries. Local cafes also invite guests to take a break, feel the tranquil ambiance, and connect with the authentic spirit of the island. Therefore, a stroll through the village is a peaceful immersive experience.
A visit to Canava Santorini Distillery will give you insight into the beverage culture of Santorini. Nestled within a traditional cave structure, this historic distillery produces spirits, especially those typical of Greek culture, such as ouzo, tsikoudia, and a variety of local liqueurs. A tour of the distillery will take you through old techniques of distillation and explain the art of crafting these iconic drinks with the use of local ingredients, such as herbs, fruits, and the well-known Santorini grapes. You will also have the chance to taste the spirits while listening to the stories behind their creation, allowing you to get in touch with Santorini traditions and flavors.
