The old mansion which exquisitely recreates a time of prosperity at the pinnacle of the island's history, provides a genuine window into Greek tradition and culture.
Messaria, once an active center for wine production, was home to many wealthy families and beautiful manor buildings. Although there are not many houses left, the village exudes elegance, and Argyros Mansion is a reminder of its glory.
George Argyros, a wealthy landowner and wine trader, owned Argyros Mansion, which was constructed in 1888 by talented local builders. The mansion's neoclassical design represented the era's wealth. However it was mostly devastated by the 1956 earthquake, and the building was abandoned for 35 years.
In 1985, the home was recognized as an architectural masterpiece by the Greek Ministry of Culture. Initiated in 1987, the renovations were completed in 1994. The restoration received a lot of praise, and in 1997 it was recognized for its importance to Greece's cultural legacy with the Europa Nostra Award.
The mansion is now open to the public as a museum and is owned by the fourth generation of the Argyros family. Manolis Argyros, the current owner, welcomes guests to travel back in time and take in the splendor of Santorini in the 19th century while being surrounded by the lavish ambiance of the time.
The museum, housed on the ground floor of the estate, offers a glimpse into 19th-century Santorini life. Beautiful handcrafted furniture from all around the world, everyday items, and exquisite decorations, including enormous paintings, appear in the museum rooms. The living room's ceiling mural, which depicts the ancient Greek thinkers Plato, Aristotle, Sophocles, and Homer, is the most fascinating of all.
From May through October, Argyros Mansion is also accessible to the general public every day (with the exception of from Mondays and Thursdays). Both solo and group guided tours are offered in Greek and English. The mansion's lovely outside spaces can also be rented out for parties and weddings, providing a timeless setting for lifelong memories.
Argyros Mansion, one of Santorini's most famous buildings, is a must-see location for anybody interested in history and culture. It is an unforgettable experience due to its remarkable collection of antique furniture, unique paintings, and artifacts from the 19th century.
