Nestled on the northern tip of Santorini’s caldera, the village of Oia is the most picturesque village on the island! Famous for its whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches, and breathtaking sunsets, Oia attracts many visitors from around the world, wishing to experience its unique beauty and capture the most memorable photos of the astonishing views of the Caldera, the Aegean Sea and the Volcanic Island at its center.
Its small narrow streets are lined with charming shops, art galleries, traditional cafes, and luxurious restaurants adding a cosmopolitan aesthetic and a laid-back elegance to the village and making a walk on them, a walk to remember. From strolling around during sunset, capturing the best photo, or enjoying a nice dinner at a restaurant on the caldera’s edge, Oia promises an array of experiences, making it a dream destination and one of the highlights of any trip to Santorini!
While Oia is more about being there and soaking in its charming atmosphere, there are a few experiences and spots to visit that you should put on your bucket list when planning your journey. Let’s outline them below:
The beauty of Oia’s sunset cannot be found elsewhere making it the most famous worldwide and for a good reason. The magical reddish colors that the sky takes as the sun dips in the horizon, paint the whitewashed buildings scattered over the caldera and create a spectacle that everyone would like to admire and capture in their photos.
One of the best spots to watch the stunning sunset is the Castle ruins of Agios Nikolaos on the tip of the village, as it offers unobstructed views of the sea and the horizon. However, one can explore its winding streets, as there are also secluded locations that offer the same beautiful views away from the crowds. Additionally, a spot at one of the restaurants with nice balconies or terraces overlooking the sunset is a nice alternative to experience this spectacular show of nature. Oia’s Sunset is definitely a must-see, so it should be first on your to-do list!
Useful Tip: If you choose to watch the sunset at the Castle ruins, make sure that you arrive at the location early, so that you find a nice and comfortable spot before the dozens of people arrive.
Your visit to Oia would be incomplete If you didn’t pay a visit to the iconic, Blue-domed churches that are considered a symbol of Santorini. You will find plenty of them scattered around the village in its small pathways, set against the Aegean’s blue backdrop, each offering another perspective of Oia. The most famous ones are the Agios Spyridonas and Agios Anastasios churches, which apart from being architectural landmarks, they also hold cultural significance. These churches are part of Oia’s charm, and you will see them in most of the postcards of this beautiful village.
So, make sure that you include them in your Oia itinerary, and get prepared to snap one of the best photos of your summer getaway. With their crisp white walls and their vibrant blue roofs, they provide the perfect background, offering you the chance to capture the true essence of Santorini Island.
Useful Tip: The most photographed, Blue-domed churches are located on an unnamed road, therefore it is difficult to find them using Google Maps. However, following small less traveled paths will surely lead you to them, along with unparalleled views along the way.
Take a stroll down the cliffs of Oia leading to the small fisherman’s port of Ammoudi. This port is located right beneath the village, and you can reach it by following the 200 steps down from the castle of Oia, by taking a donkey ride down, or through a 10-minute ride from the central road of the village.
Once you get there, you will set eyes on beautiful scenery, with the crystal-clear waters, and the traditional seafood restaurants lining one next to the other right by the sea, offering a peaceful retreat. Also, in Ammoudi Bay, there's a quite hidden swimming location, the small island of Agios Nikolaos, where visitors can take a refreshing swim or, for the more adventurous ones, dive from the cliff. It can be found by passing behind the taverns and continuing down the dirt road.
Ammoudi Bay is a much quieter location compared to the vibrancy of the streets of Oia and therefore is ideal for those seeking quiet and tranquility.
Joining a catamaran tour while in Oia, is certainly an unforgettable experience. Many tour operators organize Private or Shared catamaran cruises that allow guests to enjoy the magnificent caldera, visit the volcanic islands, and swim in the crystal-clear waters of the numerous Santorini beaches. These tours are a great way to enjoy Santorini's beauty from the sea, allowing stops for snorkeling, sunbathing, and relaxation on board. Most of them also include delicious meals paired with local wines.
However, what really makes these tours so special is the fact that some of them provide options for magical sunset cruises. The view of the sky, as the sun dips below the horizon framed by the cliffside buildings of Oia, is just breathtaking. So, whether you seek relaxation or wish to simply gaze at magnificent views, there is no better way to take in Santorini from a whole different point of view than on a catamaran tour.
Among good options for a short quiet getaway, is a visit to Therasia Island, with day trips available from Oia's Ammoudi port. The island feels like a jump into the past with its landscapes unaffected by time, tranquil beaches, and timeless charm. Upon arriving, one can climb up from the port of Riva to the village of Manolas, on foot or by mule, where cobblestone streets, whitewashed homes, and traditional taverns wait, as well as a breathtaking view of the village of Oia lying opposite.
Additionally, the tranquil beaches of Therasia, such as Agios Nikolaos and Potamos, with their crystal-clear waters, form a relaxing contrast to the noisy beaches of Santorini. Therefore, a trip to Therasia is not only about escaping the crowds of Oia but also about reconnecting with the Cyclades in their virgin and authentic form. A visit to this island will surely be one of the unforgettable moments in your Santorini adventure.
Explore the Maritime Museum located in Oia and get into the heart of Santorini's rich maritime past. Although it is a small museum, it is packed with many exhibits showing the hundred years of seafaring tradition on this island and highlighting how important was the place for trade in the past. It contains detailed ship models, nautical instruments, and various other maritime artifacts that bring the naval history of Santorini to life. Perfect for history lovers, and curious visitors, a visit to the Maritime Museum will add a fascinating cultural dimension to your Oia experience.
The Captains' Houses or ‘Kapetanospita', as they are called, are the finest examples of Santorini's architectural heritage and a tribute to the island's prosperous maritime past. They were built in the 19th and early 20th centuries, to provide a residence for a ship captain and his family, and are preserved until today, offering a glimpse into the naval past.
They are two-storey mansions painted in striking colors with arched doors, and wide balconies opening to breathtaking views of the caldera. Unlike the usually whitewashed houses in Oia, these are most often painted in bright contrasting colors, which makes them easy to pick out on the hillside.
Oia is a haven for art lovers and shoppers alike because of the many boutique stores and art galleries that highlight the vibrant culture and skilled craftsmanship of Santorini. Apart from the winding streets lined by sweet shops, one can find handcrafted pieces of jewelry, beautiful ceramics, and other unique items that reflect the artistry carried within the island. What is more, in the numerous boutique shops lining the winding streets of Oia, one can find small souvenirs, clothing, and accessories, typical of Santorini’s charm.
Therefore, whether it is to take home a truly unique souvenir or just to appreciate the creativity of the artists, a tour of Oia's boutiques and galleries is a must-do.
Armeni Bay is a small gem located just south of Ammoudi Bay and is the best location to choose in order to get away from the bustling Oia streets. This charming bay was once the old port of the village, featuring crystal-clear waters, as well as stunning views of the caldera, and the nearby island of Therasia. It invites visitors for a rest on its pebbly beach in its serene atmosphere, sunbathing under the Mediterranean sun. With only a few houses, a traditional tavern, and a small dock that private yachts can use, Armeni Bay is tranquil, simple, and naturally beautiful.
It is accessible by a short boat trip from Ammoudi, making it easily reachable and totally worth visiting If you wish to spend a few hours of relaxation and serenity. Additionally, there is a stone staircase at the edge of the caldera, which allows access to the beach. However, it is not recommended to use this way to reach it, as there have been reports about rock falls, and the path is considered dangerous.
While Oia is a famous location for its views, there are some small beaches nearby, that visitors can explore. One of the best options is Katharos Beach, which is a quiet, untouched small cove a short distance from Oia. This black pebble beach is reached via a steep path and offers a tranquil atmosphere and a dramatic volcanic landscape.
Other options nearby are Ammoudi Bay, where a refreshing dip can be taken near the rocky shoreline, or Armeni Bay, which is reached by a short boat ride from Ammoudi. Another beach option about 3 kilometers from Oia on the northern coast is Baxedes Beach. It is a long, sandy beach known for its tranquil atmosphere and family-friendly vibe. Additionally, Koloumpo Beach is about 4 km from Oia and provides a more obscure retreat. Its silent, untouched beauty holds dramatic volcanic cliffs and crystal-clear waters and is a tranquil spot that provides ample opportunity for relaxation. If one wishes to reach the more vibrant beaches of the island, like Perissa Beach, Red Beach, or Kamari Beach, they will first need to get to Fira Town, from where there are regular buses to the beaches, or pre-arrange a private transfer, allowing them to reach the locations easily and comfortably.
Oia hosts several of the best restaurants in Santorini, serving a mix of traditional Greek and Mediterranean cuisine. Some of the top eateries in Oia are located on the cliffside and boast private balconies and terraces offering stunning views of the caldera and iconic sunset, while others offer a cozier atmosphere away from the crowds. Especially for seafood enthusiasts looking to enjoy a flavorful meal while listening to the gentle sound of the waves, Ammoudi Bay offers several excellent choices.
From panoramic views to a cozy atmosphere and an immense wine list that should satisfy even the most demanding tastes, Oia has everything. There, you will find bar restaurants hanging off a cliff, simply a must for all those who want to sip cocktails while taking in the breathtaking caldera views or unparalleled views of the breathtaking sunsets. On the other hand, If you wish to avoid all that and just have something smaller and more obscure, then Oia has some small, concealed bars with laid-back atmospheres, ideal for unwinding after a long day of sightseeing. One such bar is Hassapiko Bar, or MaryKay’s, as it is also known, located at Oia’s main pedestrian path. For wine lovers, there are several bars that have specialized in offering great and numerous varieties of Santorini wines from local production.
Oia has a more upscale and intimate vibe, therefore, there aren’t any clubs available in the area. However, several of its smaller bars sometimes throw DJ parties that put a vibrant touch on the place's relaxing atmosphere.
Oia caters to a wide range of budgets, offering everything from opulent luxury accommodations to charming boutique stays. Visitors can choose from lavish hotels and suites featuring private pools, stunning caldera views, and world-class amenities like infinity pools and private balconies, all paired with exceptional service. For those seeking privacy, secluded villas and rentals are also available. Travelers on a budget, however, will find plenty of smaller hotels and guesthouses that provide clean, comfortable, and welcoming rooms without compromising on quality.
Reaching the village of Oia from the main points of arrival in Santorini, Athinios Port, the airport, or from other parts of the island, is quite easy, with several kinds of transportation available:

However, during the high tourist seasons, they can be filled up quite fast, so it is best if you can make it in early. Additionally, there are some places in Oia where it is possible to park on the street. However, you should be very careful about the location that you choose, because fines are usually effective for illegal parking.
