The geographic location of Santorini’s port offers a magnificent view, with imposing rock formations surrounding it, while whitewashed houses cling to the cliffs, creating a stunning landscape.
It is approximately 8km south of Fira, the capital of Santorini, 20km south of Oia, and 9km west of Santorini Airport. During the summer season, Athinios Port deals with a high volume of ferry departures and arrivals.
Walking from Athinios Port to the capital of Santorini is not a reasonable option due to the considerable distance (7.6km) and the steep elevation gain of over 200m. Depending on your fitness level the walk could take between 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Therefore, transportation is essential regardless of your location on the island. The available options include taking a bus, a taxi, or a private transfer. However, the most cost-effective choice is taking the bus.
Public Transportation
Santorini Public Buses wait at Athinios Port after each ferry arrival. The buses can be found to the left as you disembark from the boat, and passengers can easily purchase their tickets on the bus directly from the driver. If your final destination is not Fira town, you may need to change buses and purchase an additional ticket.
Taxi/ Transfer services
Taxis and private transfers offer a convenient alternative, especially if you book them in advance online. Taxis can accommodate up to 4 passengers, accept only cash, and can take you to various locations around the island. It is recommended not to rely on finding a taxi at the port, as they are limited, so pre-booking a transfer is a more reliable and stress-free option.
Car Rentals
Car rentals allow you to explore Santorini at your own pace. You can pick up a rental car at the port upon arrival, while motorbikes or quad rentals may also be available.
The cost of a taxi from Athinios Port to the other parts of the island varies and it is advisable to negotiate it with the driver before the journey. A ride to Fira, Imerovigli, or Oia typically ranges from 30 euros to 50 euros. Taxi rates may be higher during the night routes.
The bus to Athinios Port departs only from Fira town. If you are staying anywhere on the island, you will need to take a bus to Fira and then transfer to another bus to Athinios.
The Fira-Athinios bus schedule changes daily according to the ferry schedule and is posted one day in advance.
It is advisable to arrive at least one hour before your ferry’s scheduled departure, especially during the bustling summer season. This allows time for ticket collection, as ticket points can become crowded just before departure.
It is a good idea to purchase ferry tickets in advance, especially if you are traveling between June and September when Santorini is a popular island-hopping destination. It is also possible to purchase tickets on the spot an hour before departure during the spring, fall, and winter seasons but booking in advance is always a safe option.
There are two available travel agency kiosks in which you can purchase your tickets, Nomikos and Dakoutros, located within the row of buildings opposite the ferry dock.
Good to know!
During the high season (June to September), the port becomes crowded, and occasional ferry delays can occur. Traffic congestion in the port area might increase, so it is advisable to remain flexible with your plans and adjust them accordingly!
