Once known as the Avis Tomato Factory, the beach is named after the old tomato factory, which is one of the biggest tomato manufacturers in Santorini. Because of the nearby village of Exo Gonia, it is often referred to as Exo Gonia.
Like most of Santorini's beaches, Avis Beach bears the mark of the island's volcanic origins with its black sand and tiny volcanic pebbles. Deep, shining waters are a welcoming contrast to the striking surroundings. The presence of the volcano is everywhere, lending this less familiar place its unique charm.
It is an oasis of calm compared to the more hectic tourist spots on the island. It is easily accessible by car or motorbike. However, a private transfer is also a great option, to enjoy an effortless ride.
The beach is relatively set up with a few sun loungers and straw umbrellas, making it comfortable although it is still fairly low-key. There are a few tavernas, a couple of snack shops, and a small market nearby. Trees lining the beach provide cool shade, further adding to the peaceful atmosphere.
Being less famous than the other beaches of Santorini, Avis Beach is quite good for wind-based water sports because of its wide setting. The beach is often quite windy, making it an ideal place for windsurfers and kite surfers to enjoy the ideal conditions. Avis Beach has plenty to offer for both those searching for an easy-going day and those looking for adventure.
Although this place isn't as well-known as other Santorini beaches, its tranquility, volcanic nature, and even the ideal circumstances for water sports make it an exciting destination. You can enjoy a peaceful time under the shade of trees or perhaps have a thrilling windsurfing session.
