Just 3 kilometers away from the hustle and bustle of Oia village, this hidden cove contains dark volcanic sand, crystal-clear waters, and a tranquil atmosphere that separates it from other beaches in Santorini.
Many people think that Baxedes Beach is one of the island's best-kept secrets. Set between two tall volcanic cliffs, its small strip of black sand and stones creates a remote atmosphere that is very different from the typical tourist destinations. The beach remains largely undeveloped, with no sun loungers or umbrellas in sight. This untouched nature adds to its charm, offering plenty of space for solitude and relaxation.
Since there aren't many amenities, one can keep comfortable by bringing water, snacks, and sunscreen. For those who want to eat after a day at the beach, there are a few tavernas in the area that serve local specialties and cool drinks.
The fact that Baxedes Beach is family-friendly is one of its primary draws. The shallow water makes it ideal for families with young children. Due to its waters, swimming in makes it safe. Visitors are only warned to be cautious of larger waves given the winds that frequently sweep the beach, especially in the summer when meltemia does cause the water to become rather choppy.
Baxedes Beach's location in a cove region, surrounded by towering rocks, shields it from turbulent waters, making it a very tempting spot for a safe swim. Due to the strong summertime breezes from the north, this beach occasionally offers ideal surfing conditions if swimming isn't enough for you.
Getting to this beach is fairly easy. There is a parking lot near the beach and you can get there by vehicle. As an alternative, you can take the bus to Oia and then walk a short distance or catch a taxi for a quick ride to the beach. Upon arrival, you will discover a calm ambiance that seems worlds apart from the island's busier tourist destinations.
The beach itself offers few facilities, but the area around it is worth exploring as well. You can take trips to the Cape Columbo, which is also more secluded than others, or you can drive to Oia to enjoy a meal with the great caldera views. This village is very famous for its stunning sunsets and it is quite close in distance. This makes it ideal to combine a visit to Baxedes with a trip to Santorini's most iconic spots.
Visitors can connect with the island's natural beauty and take in the tranquil atmosphere at Baxedes, as it represents Santorini's more calm and uncommercialized side. It provides the perfect retreat whether you want to swim, surf, sunbathe, or just relax.
