This 12-kilometer-long beach northeast of the city, Fira, and about 4 kilometers from Oia, has not been charted by tourists.
Public transportation isn't the most convenient way to get to Columbo Beach. There are buses that travel from Fira to Oia, with a stop at Columbo Beach. It is essential for travelers to confirm if the buses will follow the new route instead of the old route, particularly when returning from Oia to Fira. There is also a bus from Fira to Baxedes, but it only runs once or twice a day, so it's not as reliable for regular travel. Many people choose to rent a car or schedule a private transfer in order to go to the beach for ease.
Columbo Beach is known for its privacy and tranquility, with crowds being a rare occurrence. Relatively quieter than other beaches, it is a more laid-back attitude and nudist-friendly resort. However, guests must arrive fully equipped with their own necessities because the beach is virtually underdeveloped and offers a limited number of sunbeds, umbrellas, and refreshments.
The beach itself is excellent for those who look for isolation and raw nature conditions, there is dramatic black-grey sand, pebbles, and the waves are often forceful. A striking headland along the coast provides some shade at midday, enhancing the area's rugged and untouched beauty.
The name is derived from the Columbo undersea crater, which at its last outburst in 1650, formed this beach. Part of the cone of that active crater is only 10 meters underwater, though a mere 500 meters below the sea surface; if you like swimming and adventures, you can swim safely to the east to discover what lies ahead.
One interesting place in the vicinity is the Seal Cave, a marine cave that also allows explorers who have had the necessary practice to go further in. These water activities are not recommended for average swimmers because of possible strong and treacherous waters.
Columbo Beach is ideal for those seeking peace, privacy, and a natural environment, free from the typical luxuries of more commercialized spots. Whether you’re looking to relax in solitude or embark on an underwater adventure, this hidden gem provides a perfect escape into the wild beauty of Santorini.
