Lying outside the village of Megalochori, this isolated beach is the ideal place for those who are in search of peace and wish to connect with nature. Whether you arrive by boat or on foot, the journey to Thermis Beach is as memorable as the destination itself.
To reach Thermis Beach, take the path that starts from the Boutari Winery in Megalochori, which is located 7.5 km from Fira. This is where the trailhead begins, taking you right to the edge of the caldera, ending at the beach. This well-marked trail can get steep in some places, so it does take some cautious attention. There are a couple of areas along the path where you need to watch your direction, however, these points are highlighted on the map, and there are stones set along the trail to guide you.
Keep in mind that the descent is easier than the hike up, and it approximately takes about 20 minutes. The beach cannot be approached by vehicles, which makes the access to the beach more complex.
Beauty remains unspoiled at Thermis Beach. The beach has 200 meters of sand, and it's covered in huge volcanic rocks. The waters are deep and clear turquoise, with the surrounding cliffs forming a dramatic backdrop to an exquisite view. The dark-colored pebbles, red volcanic rocks, and pumice stones across the beachfront, all tell of its volcanic origin. As the sea is of gradually rising depth, guests are encouraged to wear water shoes for comfort when entering.
The tiny church of Christos, also known as the Transfiguration of the Savior, is one of the Thermi's most notable characteristics. This little church adds spiritual tranquility to this serene coastline. It is set into the volcanic rock and stands just above the shore. Visitors are admitted free of charge, although the church and the entire surrounding area are privately owned by the Gavalas family. When a boat approaches the beach, the church is more striking since it seems to rise out of the rocks.
This place, which is largely undeveloped by tourists, is a true sanctuary for people looking for isolation and tranquility. The beach's natural beauty is enhanced by the absence of facilities and services. This is a great spot to unwind, take in the scenery, and swim in the crystal-clear waters without the people and bustle.
Thermis Beach in Megalochori is the only place to go if you're looking for an oasis of peace or an exciting experience. Its setting makes this beach a must-see for anyone traveling to Santorini who wants to venture off the usual path.
