For nature lovers and adventure seekers, walking through Santorini means discovering another dimension of the island. From wild volcanic landscapes and scenic coastal paths to quaint villages full of history, these trails allow someone to experience Santorini in its most authentic form.

The most famous trail in Santorini is the hike from Fira to Oia, which spans approximately 10 kilometers along the caldera and offers great panoramic views of the caldera villages, the impressive volcanic islands, and the immersive Aegean Sea. This route starts from the capital of the island, Fira, and it passes through some of the caldera’s most charming villages such as Firostefani and Imerovigli, featuring blue-domed churches, narrow cobblestone paths, and luxury resorts along the cliffs. As it gets to Oia, the view becomes mesmerizing, allowing for the most amazing postcard shots, which are even more stunning If you reach Oia at sunset, a truly magical moment. The route combines smoothly paved streets with unpaved hiking paths and some uphill and downhill sections, but it is accessible to most hikers.

The Santorini Volcano hike is definitely one of a kind, offering a great opportunity to discover an active volcanic area. The hike takes between 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on one’s walking speed and also how frequent breaks they may decide to take along the way. While generally not a very difficult trail, it does involve uphill walking on uneven ground which makes it a little more strenuous. However, the extraordinary landscape of black lava rocks and the stunning views of the caldera and surrounding islands at every turn make it well worth the effort.
To reach the volcanic island, a number of boat tours are available, which will take you from the main island to a small port on Nea Kameni (Volcano of Santorini), where the hike begins. This hike from Pyrgos to the Monastery of Prophet Elias is a great cultural and historical journey for hikers, starting from Pyrgos, one of the most traditional villages in Santorini and certainly one of the most beautiful. The village is renowned for its timeless charm, featuring curving, labyrinthine streets and a well-preserved Venetian castle, offering a pleasant glimpse into the island's past. Leaving the village, the path goes up toward Prophet Elias, which, lies at 567 meters (1,860 feet), and is the highest point on Santorini. The climb offers unparalleled panoramic views over the whole island-from the volcanic craters to its beautiful vineyards and beyond, including neighboring islands. On the summit lies the Prophet Ilias Monastery, an 18th-century building, which is a historical landmark of the island, housing an important museum with ecclesiastical items, and which played a very important role in the cultural and educational life of the people.
Useful Tip: Start the hike early in the morning or later in the afternoon so you can avoid midday heat since the path hardly has shades. Bring lots of water, and comfortable shoes, and don't miss your camera as the panoramic views from the top are among the very best ones of Santorini!

The hike leading to Ancient Thera ruins is ideal for those who wish to combine history, nature, and breathtaking views. It is a 3.5 km (2.2 miles) hike uphill Mesa Vouno Mountain, where lies the ancient city of Thera and can be reached from Kamari and Perissa, two of the most popular beach villages in Santorini. The path from Perissa is a bit more strenuous compared to the one starting from Kamari, while from Kamari, one can drive a bit upward and walk the remaining distance. On the top, you will find interesting remains of the 9th century BC, including the ruins of temples of the gods, a theatre, a marketplace, and public spaces that give one an interesting glimpse into the ancient life on the island, together with amazing views of the Aegean Sea and the coastline. The trail up is pretty steep and rocky in some places, so it is considered a moderate to difficult hike.
Useful Tip: Wear strong and comfortable shoes, as there are rocky steep sides along most of the hike. What is more, it would not be a bad idea to have a hat and sunscreen with you, as well as plenty of water to keep yourself comfortable and dehydrated during your hike.

This hike from Oia to Ammoudi Bay is for those in search of a short, easy walk with great views, particularly beautiful in the late afternoon since one gets great views of the caldera, as well as the iconic sunset. Hiking to iconic Skaros Rock is pretty short but highly rewarding! Starting from the charming village of Imerovigli, you'll be led along a narrow path that continues toward an isolated viewpoint on the edge of an abrupt cliff, offering unmatched panoramic views of the caldera, the striking blue of the Aegean Sea, and the surrounding islands. From the heart of Imerovigli, it's about a 10-minute descent down a series of steps to reach the official trail, which is near the Church of Agios Georgios. However, parts of the route are rugged, and therefore, If you do go ahead, do so with caution.
Useful Tip: Although the hike is rather short, it is important to use proper footwear, as much of the terrain is uneven and not too far from steep edges.

The walking path from Akrotiri Village to Red Beach is a short, picturesque trek that takes about 20-25 minutes one way. When getting closer to the beach, you will set eyes on dramatic red cliffs, towering above you and contrasting with turquoise waters at the bottom, while when you finally reach the beach, you are greeted by its reddish sand, and its quiet atmosphere that invites you to sit down, relax, swim, or simply enjoy the striking natural beauty of this one-of-a-kind location.
Useful Tip: The path is rocky when you reach close to the beach, thus, it is advisable to put on comfortable and steady shoes. Also, there have been reports of rock falls near the beach, so be extra cautious when selecting a spot to relax.

This Akrotiri to Mesa Pigadia Beach hike is a very picturesque combination of history, nature, and relaxation, starting from the small church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, which is located outside Akrotiri. From the very beginning, the trail offers great views both towards the Aegean Sea and the high caldera cliffs that outline the volcanic history of Santorini while taking you through traditional vineyards and scattered chapels.
It is a gentle trek downhill toward Mesa Pigadia, a quiet and not-so-popular beach with amazing rock formations and crystal-clear waters, ideal for those who seek adventure, scenic beauty, and tranquil beaches.
Useful Tip: Take plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes since the terrain will be uneven. Bring along your snorkeling gear because Mesa Pigadia's clear waters are perfect for seeing life underwater!

The walk to the Castle of Pyrgos (Kasteli) through Pyrgos village is a pleasant journey in time, full of great views and the beauty of traditional Cycladic architecture, taking you through a labyrinth of narrow, cobblestone streets, shaded archways, and whitewashed houses with colorful flowers. This scenic path is also lined with picturesque churches with characteristic blue roofs, a few local shops, and small cafes, a great option for rest while marveling at the beauty of this enchanting landscape. Further uphill, the path ends at Kasteli, the ruins of one of the five preserved Venetian castles of Santorini, dating from the 15th century, offering sweeping views of Santorini’s vineyards, the sparkling Aegean Sea, and the neighboring islands. It’s the perfect spot to pause, take in the scenery, and capture memorable photos.
Useful Tip: While the hike is relatively short, it involves some uphill walking, so comfortable shoes are highly recommended. After your hike, take some time to explore Pyrgos village, one of the most traditional and beautiful villages on the island.

A great and not at all exhausting hike for anyone interested in exploring the rich history of Santorini is the hike from Emporio to Castelli of Emporio. Emporio is among the oldest villages on the island, very well preserved with labyrinthine streets, and walking up and down its medieval alleys will make one feel as if being transferred back in time. The trail leads to the Castelli of Emporio, a 15th-century fortress, with tall stone walls, arches, and ancient towers. Once at the Castelli, take a moment to enjoy the views of the surrounding landscape, which blends traditional whitewashed buildings with natural beauty. The whole area also has a serene and quiet atmosphere, making it an excellent spot for leisurely exploration.
Useful Tip: For a more peaceful experience, visit it early in the morning before the village gets busy. Afterward, relax and enjoy a cup of coffee at one of the charming local cafes.
