This was established in 1903 by Georgios Argyros in the picturesque village of Episkopi Gonias (Mesa Gonia), where the vineyards extend from 35 to 150 meters in altitude, nurturing iconic varieties such as Aidani, Athiri, Assyrtiko, and Mavrotragano. Many of these wines boast an extraordinary heritage, some dating back over 150 years, and are made with traditional techniques.
The winemaking history in Santorini is very special, just like the scenery. The volcanic eruption brought not only shape to the island but also minerals to its soil, the best conditions for indigenous grape varieties. Argyros Estate is distinguished by the detailed care of such old vines, some of which are more than 150 years old, and the maintenance of traditional "kouloura" basket vine training typical of Santorini. This technique, round pruning of the vines, protects the grapes from the fierce winds and scorching sun on the island.
A new chapter was born in 1974 at the estate, driven by Georgios's grandson, Yiannis Argyros, with the skillful blend of old and new. Under his keen eye, the winery steadily enhanced its reputation. His son Matthew, the fourth generation of the family to become involved, is innovative and ambitious for the estate today. Under his care, Estate Argyros is set to increase its facilities, striving for the position of the island's second-largest wine producer while improving its visitor experience with a new winery.
The winery has received international acclaim, and its wines have often been awarded with the most prestigious awards. Wine & Spirits Magazine listed Estate Argyros among the world's top 100 wineries in 2005, 2006, 2013, and 2014, while Gourmet Magazine awarded it with the "Best Winery of White Varieties" in 2008. These are indicative of the estate's uncompromising stance on quality.
Among the greatest highlights of its estate, are a 20-year-old Vinsanto, exceptional, with every glass as a crown jewel. Other highlights include Assyrtiko Argyros, Argyros Vinsanto, Chocolate Vinsanto, and Mavrotragano, all masterpieces that showcase their skill in winemaking.
Visitors to Argyros Estate get a mix of history, innovation, and stunning sceneries. The modern architectural marvel winery located in Episkopi Gonia, just a short drive from Fira, is surely a sight to see against the rugged landscape of the island, offering fantastic panoramic views of the vineyard and beyond.
Guided tours take the guests through the winemaking of the estate, from harvesting to bottling. Guests love tastings, a journey through carefully selected flights, to explore the various and numerous faces of Santorini grapes. Knowledgeable staff introduce the history, character, and other fascinating details of each wine in an interactive and informative manner.
