Today, it belongs to two siblings who are enthusiastic about their family's winemaking traditions, reflecting great respect for the special ecosystem of this island. Their private vineyards, located in Mesa Gonia village, cultivate iconic Santorinian varieties of grapes.
The Roussos family produces seven famous wines: Rivari, Nama, Athiri, Nykteri, Mavranthiro, Caldera, and Santorini. Carefully chosen from the island's unique terroir, each wine highlights the special characteristics of Santorini's volcanic soil and climate. Made from sun-dried Assyrtiko, Aidani, and Athiri grapes, Vinsanto is a sweet wine that is especially well-known for its deep golden color and nuanced aromas of caramel, honey, and dried fruit.
With its crisp, mineral character and citrus and herbal aromas, Nykteri, an aged dry white wine made mostly from Assyrtiko, is a perfect example of Santorini's winemaking heritage. These wines, as well as others in the Roussos collection, are renowned for their outstanding quality, which results from the ideal fusion of contemporary methods and tradition.
The winery features two different canavas: the Old Canava, where traditional winemaking is preserved, and the New Canava, where tradition meets modern technology to a new generation of great wines. Together, these spaces enable Canava Roussos to produce nine different wine labels, offering visitors an opportunity to become immersed in the art of winemaking at various stages of maturation.
Open all year round, the winery offers its guests a guided tour through its historical installations. It is an 'absolute must' for each wine lover since the tour presents how a canava works. The wine tasting can be done in selected wines, which will surely give one the depth and character of Santorini wine culture. During the tour and wine tasting, the attentive and knowledgeable staff makes one's time memorable indeed.
Next to the winery, a charming tavern with a shady courtyard offers a view of the Aegean Sea, where one can enjoy traditional Greek cuisine combined with exemplary wines.
The winery often organizes "Santorini Evenings," where big wine samplings are combined with local specialties. These evenings, very famous for their friendly, cozy atmosphere and stunning surroundings, have turned into a favorite among the lovers of wine.
Canava Roussos also contributes to the cultural heritage of Santorini by hosting concerts, theater performances, and exhibitions for its guests. This will be an evening to remember, sipping aged Nykteri in this historic stone building.
